Phonics & Reading Scheme

 

Our phonics scheme is for early readers and is called 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised'.  It is accredited and compliant with the Early Years Framework (2021) and we have sets of matching phonically decodable books to go with this.  Children can then achieve the aims of the phonics programme.

Once children complete the phonics scheme, they progress onto our Big Cat Reading Scheme that follows a colour range that aligns with reading ages. These books match the fluency and phonics support schemes we use in Key Stage 2.

 

 

Children are regularly assessed to move up the scale and tracking is carried out every term.  Children are expected to be Free Readers by the end of Year 5.

 

 

We ensure children are exposed to a range of literature that helps them to build cultural capital and this is delivered through our love of reading programme called 'The Power of Reading'.  We have deliberately chosen high-quality literature based on our community's needs as well as choosing to expose children to authors who are culturally significant and write books in series.  The rationale is that if children encounter these authors and are motivated, then they will want to read more by them.  Our reading programme meets the following needs we have identified for our community:

 

• Language-rich, high-quality models;
• Stamina-building;
• Books that build positive perceptions about women and the protected characteristics in the Equality Act;
• Books that enable discussions about relationships including identifying unhealthy ones as well as healthy ones;
• Books that will promote the love of reading;
• High-quality models that will engender a love for writing.

This list sets out the literature children are exposed to in our school.  Each title has been carefully chosen to meet the needs of our community.  We deliver these titles through:

 

• Longer in-depth study in English lessons;
• Daily class readers;
• Dedicated PSHE lessons;
• Moments throughout the day or week.
